P.Y.Tang XRAY-ORCA TQ denied a win in rain disrupted Total Hobby EP Touring Race (August 28, 2011)

After a successful first race, Total Hobby EP Touring Race was back on August 28, 2011 at the Puteri Mart racetrack in Johor, Malaysia. Attracting more entries from Singapore and Central Malaysia this time, the event competed in 1/10 Open Modified EP Class, 2WD Mini EP Open and an addition of the 1/10 GP Touring Class.

Close competition was seen from the 1/10 Open Modified EP Class, which showed huge improvement in pace from the local drivers. A-Main was highly competed with same qualifying system from last race, where best 2 of 4 rounds was taken for qualifying. The race started off hot with 3 different drivers taking the TQ in the first 3 qualifying. James Ki of Xray took the Round 1, Lee Han Chuang in another Xray took Round 2, while P.Y.Tang started off slow in the first 2 rounds finally led the pace in Round 3 taking TQ, setting the fastest timing of the day 24 laps 5:04.752 at fastest laptime of the day at 12.269s. It was great improvement from P.Y.Tang after changing springs setups and improving the tyre treatment with the NASA Mighty Gripper V2 to suit the high abrasive track. Posing another consistent 24 lapper in Round 4, P.Y.Tang took a light breather for taking the overall TQ. Good results for XRAY which took 7 spots in the A-Main!

Litemodz Design CVS Evo2 now in stock @ Quantum!

The new CVS raises the standard of transmission bringing our scale cars into the 21st Century by utilizing the technology as used on pretty much all modern day Full size cars.

The advantage of running constant veolcity driveshafts has been well known for nearly the last 100 years and it is a major factor in maintaining wheel compliance with the ground.

The new shaft provides constant velocity equalising input and output shaft speeds reduces wheel vibration to a minimum providing a much smoother transmission increasing steering and overall grip levels on the car by reducing unwanted tyre scrub.

Using the CVS in both the front and rear of the car provides a more stable and precise car that is easier to drive with the added benefit of improving transmission wind up and tyre wear.

The potential benefit of running constant velocity drive shafts can be seen when looking at the standard UJ.

Theoretically a motor spinning at 40000 rpm with a gear ratio of 7 to 1 will produce a wheel speed of 5714 rpm. At zero angle this will remain at 5714rpm. However introduce angle into the joint and it begins to fluctuate. It is common to run with the drive shafts with some angle given the ride height to diff height toe angle and camber. At 30 degrees (front) the speed fluctuation will be approximately 29% giving an actual speed fluctuation of: 1657 rpm which occurs twice per revolution in both directions.

5714 45 rotation accelerating

7371 90 rotation decelerating

5714 135 rotation accelerating

4057 180 rotation decelerating

5714 225 rotation accelerating

7371 270 rotation decelerating

5714 315 rotation decelerating

4057 0 rotation accelerating

5714 45 rotation

This can produce excessive tyre wear and load the transmission wearing drive shafts, cups, pulleys and belts.

At the same time the rear of the car will also produce some results. Assuming 3 degrees toe in and a shaft operating angle of some 10 degrees there will be an approximate speed fluctuation of 3 %.

That is +/- 171 rpm again in both directions.

Since the suspension on the car is relatively soft every time that car leans in a corner the speed fluctuation is increased maybe up to as much as 12% assuming the angle is now operating at close to 20 degrees.

This is as much as 685 rpm.

XRAY-ORCA podiums Modified Class at Racecraft Infinity On-Road Challenge 2011 Race 4 (July 3, 2011)

After 2 races were cancelled due to rain, Racecraft Infinity On-Road Challenge 2011 Race 4 finally resumed with 2 classes to compete, Modified Class and 17.5T Boosted Class. New layout made the track very technical with almost 3 seconds added to the laptimes. Still some part of the track needed to touch up, temporary protection barrier was in placed to get the event going!

In the Modified Class, Nicholas Lee and P.Y.Tang set early pace posting 16.974s and 17.061s respectively. Qualifying was unpredictable as starting position was picked randomly making passing traffic very difficult due to the technical layout. TQ went to Nicholas Lee with P.Y.Tang and EC Wee lining up 2nd and 3rd in the grid.

Top 10 Qualifying Standings (A-Main Modified Class)
1. Nicholas Lee - Tamiya TRF417/Speed Passion/Speed Passion/Reedy - 21 laps 6:07.343

As expected, the finals for Modified Class will be a tight race for Nicholas Lee and P.Y.Tang. Final A1 started off clean, with P.Y.Tang looking with a faster pace following closely behind Nicholas Lee. Unfortunately, P.Y.Tang traction rolled in the in-field allowing EC Wee to pass. While Nicholas Lee running away for the win, it was a tough battle for 2nd, EC Wee closing up every line. P.Y.Tang then made a move at the end of straights braking very late, overtaking 2nd. Final A2 was unlucky for Nicholas Lee as he spun out corner 3 causing accidents and seeing him retired from battery falling out. P.Y.Tang cruised in for the win with EC Wee in 2nd and Hasron with a consistent run in 3rd. Final A3 was neck to neck to the end for the top 2 who was still fighting for the 1st overall. This final saw 3 different drivers led the run, with Chee Lip Keong leading, when P.Y.Tang and Nicholas Lee made early mistakes. P.Y.Tang caught up in 2nd place trying to overtake but 2 contacts with Chee Lip Keong created a chance for Nicholas Lee to pass and took the lead. Less than a minute to go, Nicholas Lee and P.Y.Tang was neck to neck up to the 6th-minute, unable to pass P.Y.Tang had to settle for 2nd with 144/1000th seconds behind.

P.Y.Tang dominates TQ and win for Xray & Orca at Shepherd Cup Series 1 (May 29, 2011)

In conjunction with the 1/10 GP and 1/8 GP Shepherd Cup Series 1, an addition of the 1/10 EP Touring Class was held at the NRC Racing Circuit in Southern Johor of Malaysia. It was organized by Niko Sales & Services Centre. P.Y.Tang took his Orca-powered Xray T3'11 yet another successful race to TQ and win for the Modified Class. Although entries was not great, P.Y. chose to attend this race, instead of the same day clash of the Malaysia National Championships Round 2 in Kuala Lumpur, as the NRC Race Circuit is a much larger track and would be perfect to test the Orca RX2 modified motors with turbo boost.

Newly resurfaced track improved the laptime tremendously from the last meeting for EP touring car race. During the qualifying rounds, P.Y.Tang posted faster laptimes after each and every round setting the pace for the EP class. Posting at 14.127s, breaking the previous EP track record by almost a second per lap and also faster than any 1/10 GP touring cars. P.Y.Tang added that the new setups on the new Orca Vritra Pro-Spec MK2 ESC made the powerband smoother in the in-field and more powerful on the long straights with a combination with the Orca RX2 5.5T Professional Brushless Motor. Along with other minor setup changes to using the Ride Subaru Legacy B4 bodyshell and roll center changes, P.Y.Tang improved to take TQ spot, followed by Bernard Lee in 2nd and B.H.Gan in 3rd, all on Xray.

Top 3 Qualifying Standings EP (A-Main):

3. B.H.Gan - Xray T3'11 - Orca Vritra - LRP - Dualsky - 20 laps 5:14.318 - 14.994s

P.Y.Tang dominated A-Main Leg 1 by posing faster laptimes at 14.029s, took the win in Leg 1. Using warming and higher charging amps techniques to the Orca Infinite 6000 60C LiPo as recommended by ORCA engineers, improved another 0.1s on laptimes. B.H.Gan came in 2nd and Mingkai 3rd. Wrong tire choice dropped Bernard Lee to 4th. While waiting for the A-Main Leg 2, rain started pouring down disrupting the race when the organizer called off the remaining runs. P.Y.Tang took the overall win from Leg 1 result, and unlucky for Bernard Lee, he had to settle for 4th, while B.H.Gan persistent win himself 2nd overall and Mingkai took 3rd podium spot.

Top 3 Final Standings EP (A-Main Leg 1):

Litemodz Design CVS Evo2 available soon @ Quantum!

Preorder starts on May 21, 2011. Be the first to get it through Quantum!

The all new CVS EVO2 Constant Velocity Driveshaft fits directly into the Tamiya, Xray, TOP, Yokomo, Schumacher, Hotbodies, Associated, Robitronics, Corally and many more...

Manufactured from Hardened Steel the new designed driveshaft reduces weight whilst maintaining long life.

The new revolutionary design which up until now has never been seen in model cars is based on the full size constant velocity driveshafts. By cleverly maintaining an intermediate component on the median plane (patent pending) the litemodz CVS provides constant velocity at all articulated angles.

Running the CVS provides more grip, less tyre wear and higher cornering speeds due to the reduction in tyre slippage and scrub by eliminating speed oscillations at the wheel.

On the track the benefit of running the new CVS is clear.

Winner of the DHI Cup, and many races across the world the CVS is the ultimate.

The inaugural MBA Cup was held at the MBA Resort (Minyak Beku Agrotourism) in Batu Pahat, Malaysia. Located in the Western Johor state, the MBA racetrack is a newly build facility, resort-style environment with chalets and restaurants just across the racetrack. Temporary layout outlined by steel pipes would soon to be completed with proper islands and curbs sometime in the 3rd quarter of 2011. Myself and 7 other drivers from Singapore drove across the border to this unfamiliarize town to compete in this new racetrack along with a some top drivers from Malaysia in the 1/10 EP Open Modified Class. This would be one of the bigger and more exciting race to attend as it attracted Malaysia National Champions 2009 Jackie Siow (Xray/Orca), Malaysia National Champions 2010 Azri Amri (Yokomo/Orca), FEMCA 2010 Champion KS Chu as well as multiple race winners. The event also attracted about 20 drivers in the 1/10 GP Class. We started the journey at 5am in the morning from Singapore on May 7 Saturday, hoping to get a full day of practise before the race on Sunday, arrived at the MBA racetrack at about 9am.

Hitting the first pack at about 10am, track was very tight and technical, traction was pretty good, still running the same Xray T3'11 setup from TITC 2011, laptime was pretty decent on the first run clocking about 14.2s. We know that we are still have some work to do which the local drivers had clocked around 13.6s previously. The steel pipes outlines are very harsh on the car we had to drive cautiously to avoid repairs. Track condition was noticeably changing as the sun heating up the track. I did managed to test some different setups especially on shock oils, springs and ESC settings on the Orca powerplant to get proper traction level. Also changing the roll-center, my car felt a lot better but still lacking on cornering speed. Insert choice was also important to compromise traction and overheating the tires. At the end of the day, I have decided to use the LTC-R bodyshell which gave a better flow at cornering. Testing on a prototype tire cleaner, it helped to improve the traction, managed to reduce the laptime to 13.6s. Things were looking potentially good for raceday.

Sunday started early at 8am, a 3-minute control practise run to re-sort the grouping. I used an old tire set to save up the new tires which are controlled to 2 sets for qualifying, and additional 2 sets for A-Main or 1 set for other mains. I managed to clock a good laptime to put myself No.3 in Group 1. The Q1 was scheduled at about 11am. This heat would be very crucial, as track temperature is still not very high. My Xray T3'11 was feeling very good and set the 2nd fastest just shy at 21 laps at 5:00.031. As seen most of the time, ex-Kyosho team driver Nicholas Lee with a very good run set the fastest time at 22 laps 5:09.385. Nicholas has been untouchable throughout practise and qualifying. As traction level was getting low into the hot afternoon sun, it was more difficult to improve the time but it would still be possible with a clean run. I felt very good with the car, and decided to run front and rear gear diff for Q2 and Q3 to get a bit easier rotation. My car felt a little better around the technical in-field. I had a very good run in Q3 leading the pace but a slight touch from a backmarker at the 4th minute lost almost 4 seconds and the lead. Luckily, no drivers improved their timing and my fastest timing from Q1 would put me 2nd from the pole position. The qualifying ended well with 4 Xray drivers and a whopping 7 Orca drivers in the A-Main including Singapore E.C.Wee which have started racing recently and definitely one of the upcoming driver to look out for.

Final A1 started with a very good feeling of my car and fresh rubbers. Starting from 2nd can be a very good position. Unfortunately, I had to retire with a failed drivetrain after an aggressive move by car No.3 going into the first corner causing some major accidents. Nicholas Lee held his cool taking Final A1 after multiple attacking from Azhar, Jackie Siow and Azri Amri. I finished 10th in Final A1. Final A2 started off cleaner for myself, trying to be more cautious on the front and back cars paid off. I had to go wide preventing a touch by the back cars, allowed me to squeeze through on the outside from a pileup. I managed to lead the run, with Jackie Siow following closely about 1 second behind. At the 2:00 mark, i made a touch on the pipes after the left sweeper, allowing Jackie Siow to close in right behind me. I had to keep my pace as I was a little faster in and out of sweeper, but Jackie Siow made a mistake out of the right sweeper at 2:30 mark, allowing a big breather for me to and taking the win for Final A2. It was a big relief after retiring 10th in Final A1. Going into Final A3, the track condition would have changed tremendously, traction level should have been increased a lot after the 45-minute GP A-Main as well as the cooler temperature around 5pm. I decided to run harder inserts and also increased the turbo boost settings on my Orca VTC Pro-Spec MK2 ESC. Final A3 started off more cleanly with Nicholas Lee leading followed by me and Jackie Siow. After first lap, I knew I had a faster car, I tried to follow as closely as possible to Nicholas Lee. At the 2:00 mark, I tried to make a move on after the long straight going into the sweeper, but unable to get through. Nicholas Lee touched the side pipes and made a contact to my car causing me to go very wide and lost some grounds. I had to drive super hard and managed to reel in the leader again at 3:00 mark. Nicholas Lee made a small mistake at 3:15 going up the small right chicane in the in-field, I tried to squeeze through but unsuccessful. I had to avoid any contacts as Jackie Siow was not very far behind in 3rd. At the 4:00 mark, I managed to push very close, enough to make a move on the inside after the long straights into the sweeper when Nicholas Lee left a small opening on the inside line. The pass allowed me to take the win for Final A3, followed by Jackie Siow and Azri Amri. Nicholas Lee, unfortunately retired after hitting the side pipes causing his UJ to fail. With the win in Final A3, I was able to take the overall win, and it was a good day for Xray to take top 2, and Orca to take top 4!
